As the United States prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence in 2026, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History is bringing important pieces of the country's past into the spotlight.

One of the museum's November highlights is the return of a historic Revolutionary War flag to public display following conservation work. The Ansbach-Bayreuth Regimental Flag, made in 1775, is among the rare surviving military flags connected to the American Revolutionary War.

The flag was surrendered at Yorktown in October 1781, one of the most important moments in the conflict that led to American independence. Its renewed display offers visitors an opportunity to explore a period that helped shape the country's national identity.

The museum's wider programme also reflects on the meaning of America's 250th anniversary. Its exhibition, In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness, brings together 250 objects that explore American history, democratic ideals and the country's development across generations.

The collection includes significant historical objects, including the desk Thomas Jefferson used while drafting the Declaration of Independence and the famous Star-Spangled Banner.

Beyond military and political history, the Smithsonian is also highlighting American cultural traditions through events celebrating music, food, film and community stories. November programmes include cultural events recognising Hmong New Year and the heritage of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

These activities show that America's history is not represented by a single story. It has been shaped by different communities, traditions and generations.

As the 250th anniversary approaches, museums and cultural institutions have an important role in encouraging Americans to reflect on the country's past while considering what its national identity means today.

The Smithsonian's programme offers visitors a chance to connect with history through objects, exhibitions and living cultural traditions.
